Science at SPSL

At SPSL, science is all around. This exciting subject engages students with hands-on experiments, learning through play and observation while making cross-curricular links to maths, art, D&T, among other areas whenever possible.

In addition to our regular science teaching, we have ‘WOW Science Days’ (days off the regular time table where students are captivated with a carousel of experiments), annual trips to the British Museum with visits to the Wonder Lab, seasonal nature walks, visits from and talks with real scientists, and we collaborate with as many national science-related initiatives as possible such as the RSPB’s Big Garden Birdwatch, The Great Science Share, British Science Week, among many others.

Our school was recently awarded the PSQM (the Primary Science Quality Mark) which is a distinguished and accredited award that recognises wonderful science teaching and learning within primary schools. Additionally, in our most recent OFSTED (November 2019), science was one of the subjects deep-dived and found to be taught at a good level.

We have an in-school STEAM (Science-Technology-Engineering-Art-Maths) club every Monday during lunch time for KS2.

At SPSL, we also have a great playground area for outdoor learning. We have a pond that has tadpoles every spring, lots of trees with birdhouses and birdfeeders, (natural) grassy hills and a very nice bug hotel. Our close proximity to various parks is ideal when we want to expand upon our outdoor learning.

We follow the SNAP Science curriculum, by Collins Connect, for the teaching and progression of science skills in years one through six.  We work hard to ensure your children not only engage with science but develop and progress their working scientifically skills. If you have any questions about the teaching and learning of science, please do get in touch.
